There’s no stopping Fairview owner/vintner Charles Back when his interest in a creative, entrepreneurial project is piqued. It all started in 1995 with a suggestion by a wine buyer for Western Wines based in the UK. The man mooted the vinification of a Rhône-style blend but with a Cape flavour: ‘a nice, friendly wine that would do well in large quantities…’
Today the Goats do Roam brand is, in fact, the single-biggest selling South African wine label in the United States.

The vintner has blended together grapes that would never be allowed in the Côte du Rhône. Fairview lists the blend as: 33% Pinotage, 22% Shiraz, 13% Grenache, 13% Carignan, 10% Cinsault, 5% Gamay Noir and 4% Mourvèdre. The result is an easy drinking wine that is best consumed within one or two years. This is a blend of grapes and it is fitting that it can be enjoyed with a hearty winter stew. If you are still able to grill, serve this wine with a steak topped with blue cheese or green peppercorn sauce. It also pairs nicely with garlic enhanced pasta dishes. |
